LUMBAR STRAIN

Lumbar Strain is caused when there is an injury to the ligaments, tendons, and/or muscles of the low back.   This is caused when the joints are moved beyond their normal limits causing microscopic tears of varying degrees to the tissues involved.  This is the most common cause of low back pain.  The cause of most strains is overuse, improper use, or trauma.  The pain from a strain injury will last from a few days to a few weeks.  This is what is referred to as the acute phase.   If the strain lasts longer than three months, it is referred to as the "chronic phase."

The diagnosis of lumbar strain is based on the patient's history of injury, the location of the pain, and the physical finding.  An x-ray examination may be appropriate if an injury to the joint(s) is suspected.

Chiropractic care has proven to be very beneficial in the treatment of sprains on the back.  The chiropractic physician will often use physiotherapy modalities to address the swelling and address pain syndromes.  Often Spinal rehab exercises are also utilized to help prevent future injury.
