Neck Injuries and Disorders in Asheville NC

Do you have neck pain which does not seem to go away?  Is it keeping you up at night or causing you do avoid activites?  Does the pain stay in one place or does it radiate down into the muscles of your neck or effect your head?  Is it worse at night and maybe even wake you up?  When did it start and do you know what brought it on?  These are some of the questions that are important that your doctor should ask you.

What Causes Neck pain?

Any of the structures of your neck can cause pain.- muscles,, tendons, ligaments, bones, joints, or nerves.  To even complicate this even more you pain can also be referred pain from your shoulder, arm, Trapezious muscles, Levator Scapula muscles, Jaw,and other surrounding structures.

The good news is that most neck pain can be traced back to an event where you experienced muscle strain or tension. It can be set off by prolonged fixed positions such as sitting at a computer for too long. A not so uncommon neck pain occurs when the neck muscles get strained from sleeping in an awkward position or overdoing exercises. Falls or accidents, including car accidents, are another common cause of neck pain. Whiplash, a soft tissue injury to the neck, is also called neck sprain or strain.

The best news is that most conditions do not require surgery.  In most cases we are able to treat neck pain with a short treatment plan consisting of addressing the pain and tension by correcting the misalignment of the neck bones with a gentle adjustment to the spine.  It is not unusual to also use physical therapy modalities such as electric stimulation, traction, Ice,  or heat.  The most important issue is to address the cause of the pain.  Many times people will take pain medications which should be taken only for a short time.  If the pain does not go away then it very well maybe a condition that you should see a Chiropractor who is trained to look to the source of the problem and treat it at its source.  In our office we tell our patients that if you have a physical problem then it needs a physical fix.  If it is a chemical problem then it will require a chemical fix.  If emotional then emotional fix.
